Little Black Book PR by Renee Schonborn

Little Black Book PR by Renee Schonborn

I started my career in corporate communications and moved into advertising and then public relations. I started Little Black Book PR in 2004 and have loved learning and growing with this dynamic industry. My focus is on media relations, stakeholder relations, content development and social media and my clients range across both business and lifestyle. I work with a small core team and a close group of associates to ensure that I can provide the best possible solution for my clients. It is a very exciting and challenging time to be in the PR business! This is my Nomadic story

What lead you to becoming an entrepreneur/freelancer/working for yourself/ starting your own business?

I was pregnant with my second child when I started Little Black Book PR. My employer said that they would not agree to paid maternity leave and so I figured it was a good time to go on my own. I was right!

How did you get your first client and how hard/easy was it to build your client base that allow you to work for yourself ?

I cold called for my first few clients. Since then clients have come via referrals. The toughest years have been 2016 & 2017 due to the economy and general sentiment in South Africa. That looks set to change in 2018 - fingers crossed!

What is a great tip that you can share with other nomadic business owners ?

Keep investing in yourself with ongoing learning - never be complacent.

What has been/or what is your greatest challenge in working for yourself?

Never really being able to switch off from work.

What is your favourite thing about working for yourself ?

The freedom and flexibility it affords me.

How do you keep yourself motivated?

A small dose of paranoia goes a long way.

How you do you balance it all work/life ?

There is no such thing as work/life balance and the sooner you make peace with that, the better. I believe it is a fantasy.

What has been your biggest lesson to date working for yourself ?

Never fire a client on a Monday and don't agree to take on a new client on a Friday.

Do you have any special or noteworthy projects that are coming up that you can share with us or what is a dream project or goal for 2018 ?

A goal in 2018 is to do great work for my clients, learn more and to secure new business that excites me.

Where can people find/follow you ?

I am the cobbler whose children have no shoes. You can get in contact with me via email or find me at my coworking space.
